What is Coluracetam?
Coluracetam (MKC-231) was developed by Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma. Although it carries the racetam suffix, its research interest lies in a specific mechanism: it was reported to enhance high-affinity choline uptake, the rate-limiting step of acetylcholine synthesis in neurons.
Early studies used rats in which cholinergic neurons had been impaired with the toxin AF64A, and reported that coluracetam improved learning-task performance in those models. The compound was later licensed to BrainCells Inc. and examined in a phase 2 trial in major depressive disorder with generalised anxiety, but development did not continue to approval.
